5 Strange – But True! – Causes of Acne

Acne is such a difficult skin condition to treat.  As such, it seems everyone is grasping at straws when it comes to prevention and treatment.  A lot of strange myths have popped up; sadly, acne-sufferers believe these untruths because they are so desperate for answers.

But strangely, there are several things that can cause acne – and they sound pretty farfetched!  Check out these things that could be causing your acne outbreaks.

1. Milk

For all our lives, we’ve heard health professionals preach the importance of a well-balanced diet.  Sadly, one of those crucial elements may actually be bad for some people.

A study published in the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology claims dairy might not be good for the skin.  Boys who drank two or more servings of milk a day were more likely to have acne.  And the health professionals believe the data holds true for the older population as well.

Milk contains many biological products that can cause surprising responses in people who drink it.  These biological factors can increase sebum production.  Sebum is an oil produced by the skin that is one of the leading causes of clogged pores – and acne.

Sadly, professionals don’t know why milk has this effect on some people but not others.  If you suspect milk to be the culprit of your acne, try replacing your favorite dairy drink with soy or almond milk for two months.  See if your complexion clears.

2. Lack of Omega-3s

A study published in Lipids in Health and Disease found omega-3 fatty acids can help prevent acne.  The study participants took a daily omega-3 supplement and saw a decrease in acne outbreaks.

Researchers believe inflammatory chemicals increase the production of sebum.  And omega-3 fatty acids prevent those chemicals from making the harmful oily substance.

3. Carbohydrates

Researchers divided their research participants into two groups.  For twelve weeks, one group ate a diet high in carbohydrates.  The other ate high amounts of protein, vegetables, and whole grains.

Both groups saw a decrease in the number of pimples.  That proves a healthy diet alone can help cut back out outbreaks.  However, the high protein group had double the drop in acne.

The researchers believe high insulin levels can cause skin inflammation.  The sugar that is prevalent in these carb food products can cause this unhealthy spike of insulin.

4. Sun

Health professionals believe sun exposure can increase the skin’s oil production.  This excess oil clogs the pores and causes acne.

On the other hand, some people claim that oily sunscreen can just make things worse.  The actual skin protectant doesn’t cause harm – just the oily substance it is mixed with.  Therefore, to keep your skin safe from the dangerous sun and greasy sunscreen, look for spay on versions.  The skin protectant is dissolved in alcohol instead of thick oils.  The alcohol will evaporate without clogging your pores.

5. Cell Phones

Because we often tote our cell phones with us everywhere we go, they can easily pick up harmful germs.  Many of those germs can cause breakouts.  By combining bacteria with the friction of the phone’s surface on your skin, breakouts can happen.  As the phone rubs across your jawline, it will spread the bacteria, increase inflammation and worsen current outbreaks.

At the very least, you should clean your phone with anti-bacteria wipes three to four times per week.  In a perfect world, you would use the speakerphone or hands-free device so it never comes in contact with your sensitive skin.

While these causes of acne may seem pretty farfetched, they are backed up by sound scientific research.  As you look for acne treatments, focus on what could be causing the outbreaks in the first place.  Are one of these strange culprits to blame?
